Using Edges vs Shadows on Skirt Sides

When designing a skirt in Pocket Styler Studio, the side edges can be emphasized either with Edges (Edge property) or Shadows (Shadow property). Choosing the right method depends on the material, style, and the visual effect you want.

🔹 When to Use Shadows

Shadows are perfect for soft, natural folds and volume. Use shadows when:

  • The fabric is lightweight, flowing, or semi-transparent (e.g., chiffon, silk, thin cotton).
  • You want the edge to look soft and subtle, blending naturally with the skirt.
  • You are creating a draped, asymmetrical, or layered effect.

How to apply:

1. Open your skirt project

2. Add a new Brush layer.

3. Choose a soft round brush.

4. Set color slightly darker than the skirt fabric.

5. Adjust Size (small to medium depending on fold) and Opacity (20–40%) to make it look natural.

6. Draw along the side edges where you want subtle shadowing.

🔹 When to Use Edges

Edges work best for structured, crisp, or defined hems. Use edges when:

  • The skirt is made of stiff fabrics (e.g., denim, leather, wool).
  • You want the edge to stand out clearly and separate panels.
  • You need a clean, precise line to enhance geometry or decorative stitching.

How to apply:

1. Go to the side layer of the skirt.

2. Open the Edge tab.

3. Choose the type of edge you want (simple line or decorative).

4. Adjust Color (usually slightly darker than base fabric) and Opacity.

5. Fine-tune Thickness for the desired prominence.

6. Optionally, combine with subtle shadows on top for more depth.

💡 Tip:

You can also combine both: add a crisp edge for structure and a soft shadow for depth. This works well on skirts with pleats, panels, or layered details, giving a realistic and professional look.
