Distortion on Patterns

Using the distortion tool on Patterns can add to the realism of folds

We can add shadows and glares to an item to make it look like there are folds, ruffles, or pleats. But Studio still shows it as one flat item, with a visual effect from the shadows. So any patterns you add won’t match the folds and shadows. We can use the “Distortion” tool to adjust the patterns to make them follow the folds we created. I’m going to start with a skirt that already has the shadows for folds:

Then I’m going to click on “Select All” at the top of “Layers” on the right to apply a pattern to the whole item. Then select a pattern from the left:

You can see the pattern is flat across the folds. To change that, I’m going to go to “Lower Part” on the right and then “Distortion.” You can use this with the brush to paint across the folds and bend the pattern. Paint it like you would the shadows: go to the pencil icon > “Warp Brush,” and draw a line right across the fold. Remember to hold down the shift key if you want a straight line.

Now you can see a bend in the pattern where I painted a line with the Warp Brush. Repeat this along all the folds around the skirt. Paint over the same line multiple times if you want to increase the scale of the bend.

Once done you have a pattern that bends along with the folds, looking more realistic!
