🎯 Gradation Effect: From Large to Small (Using a Pattern)
Sometimes, you need a gradual decrease in size to make your design more expressive — for example, flowers, drops, circles, or stars. You can easily create this gradation using just one brush and some transformations. Here’s a step-by-step guide.
🪄 What We’re Creating:
An illusion of elements “scattering” from large to small — in a line, arc, or free shape. Perfect for petals, sequins, beads, stars, or any repeating details.
🔧 How to Do It:
1. Choose a pattern
Select a design with the element you want — for example, a floral print. This will be the base of your brush
2. Clone the pattern as a brush
Tap “Clone as Brush”. You’ll now be able to edit the element as a standalone brush.
3. Erase everything but one element
In the brush editor, use the eraser to keep just one flower (or your chosen shape).
4. Duplicate the brush several times
Use “Duplicate Brush” to make multiple copies.
5. Resize each copy
Using Transform, scale each new brush slightly smaller than the previous one.
6. Arrange the brushes in sequence
Create a smooth line from large to small. You can keep it straight or bend it into a curve.
7. Merge the brushes
Select all and tap “Merge Brushes” to group them into one object.
8. Copy and reuse
Now you can duplicate your new line as many times as you like — along hems, belts, sleeves, etc.
📌 In the next post, I’ll show how to build on this technique to create a spiral or flower shape using brush rotation and scaling.
