Erasing parts of a pattern

Sometimes I want to use only part of the pattern I’m putting on a garment. It’s so easy to do.

On these pants, I wanted the pretty stars from the bird and stars print in the animal section, but I didn’t want the birds on this one.

When I add the print, it looks like this. Very pretty, but I only want the stars in this design.

So, I click the three dots next to “pattern” and select “copy as brush”

Now, I delete the pattern from the pants and the pattern is still there because it is now under brush 2.

**TIP: MAKE SURE you have the size, orientation, and colors that you want first because once you delete the pattern you can’t change it unless you delete the brush and start over again.

Now, I navigate to the eraser brush and start erasing the birds:

This is exactly what I was going for!

Now on this particular pants, I created panels (see my post on creating a transparent panel), so I’m going to unhide those and show you what my finished product looked like.

I love just the stars in this transparent panel!

If you are doing this to a pattern and notice “bare” spots from where you erased. You can always add the pattern again, position the parts you want to keep covering the spots where you erased, save as a brush again, and erase the parts you don’t want. Since both patterns are in different brushes, you will be able to erase one without erasing the other.
