🎩✨ How to Paint Sequins on a Hat — Part 1: Brush Method ✨🎩

In this post, I’ll show you how I paint sequins in Studio. There are many ways to create them.  Today is the first method: square brush on a hat.

1️⃣ I’ll be working with a pre-made hat

For this tutorial, I’ll use a black hat I created earlier. I’ll paint the sequins in white so they stand out well and are easy to see on the dark background.

2️⃣ Create a new brush

In the “Layers” panel, select the layer you want to decorate (like the ribbon on the hat), add a “Brush” property.

3️⃣ Choose the square brush shape

This will be the base of the sequin. Square shapes give a sharp, reflective look and work great in rows

4️⃣ Adjust size and spacing

Make the brush small enough so sequins don’t overlap, but still close enough to look neat and decorative.

5️⃣ Set the color to white or light gray

White works best for creating a shiny, reflective effect. You can try other shades later for a different finish.

6️⃣ Draw along the part of the hat you want to decorate

Gently brush along the ribbon or brim to place the sequins evenly, following the shape of the hat.

7️⃣ Add shadow and shine over the sequin layer using properties

A soft glow or shadow adds depth and gives the illusion of metallic reflection.

8️⃣ Create another brush with tiny dots for highlights

Add a few bright dots or sparkles to simulate light reflection on the sequins. Just a few strokes will make a big difference!

Here’s the result

I like this method because it gives a neat and stylish result. Plus, everything is done on a single layer — quick and easy.

In the next post, I’ll show you a different approach — how to create sequins using Studio’s built-in patterns.
