Details Tab: Start with the Basics
If you’ve already explored the Layers tab and learned to work with simple shapes, it’s time to dive into the Details tab — especially the first two rows. These are the foundation of almost every project in Studio. Personally, I use one of these six basic shapes in about 99% of my designs.
These are simple base forms (square, circle, etc.) that you can fully customize. When you add one, it becomes a sub-layer inside your current layer. The only difference between them is the initial shape, so choose whichever is closest to your design idea.
Each shape has editing handles that make it easy to modify:
- 🟡 Yellow circles — control curves and smooth edges
- ◻️ White squares — stretch, shrink, or pull out corners
- 🔁 Curved arrow — rotates the entire shape
My favorite is the third shape — it’s the easiest to adjust quickly thanks to its simple and flexible lines.
The sixth shape is special: it’s an invisible detail. All of its properties are set to zero by default (fabric, outline, pattern, brush) — except shadow and distortion. It’s perfect for adding decorative elements like glitter, feathers, or plastic, without adding extra visible layers.
All the other elements in the Details tab are based on the same concept — but come with preset values and proportions to save time. You’ll find:
- Various pocket shapes
- Lapels and bows
- Ties and belts
- Different types of collars
- Closures, zippers, and buckles
These aren’t final components, but starting templates. For example, if you need a pocket, just pick the closest preset and then fine-tune it: change the shape, adjust the texture, and style it your way.
🧵 Important to remember:
Each layer (like a skirt or top) can contain up to 12 details. That’s per layer! So when planning a complex project, keep in mind: the more details you add overall, the heavier the load on your device. Large numbers of elements can slow down Studio, especially on older or weaker devices.
In the next posts, we’ll experiment with these shapes — both the basic ones and custom ones created from scratch.
