Common Mistakes in Drawing Clothes — and How to Fix Them

Are you just starting out with designing clothes in Pocket Styler Studio? Then this post is for you!

Let’s go over 3 common beginner mistakes — and quick tips to solve them.

Mistake #1: Overcomplicating the First Sketch

“Too many details too soon”

When you jump straight into tiny buttons, zippers, or prints — your design can lose balance.

Fix it:

Start with the overall silhouette. Focus on shape and proportions first. Details come later!

Mistake #2: Shadows in the Wrong Direction

“Why does it look flat or weird?”

If your light source isn’t consistent, shadows can make the outfit look confusing.

Fix it:

Pick a direction for the light — like top left. Then apply shadows and highlights accordingly to all parts.

Mistake #3: Mixing Too Many Textures

“Velvet, denim, sequins… all at once?”

Too many textures can fight for attention and make the design messy.

Fix it:

Use 1–2 main fabric styles per look. Let the textures enhance, not overpower the outfit.

Tip

Always zoom out and review your outfit as a whole. Ask yourself:

> Does it look balanced? Is it readable? Would I wear this?

Small adjustments can make a big difference 💡

👙 Bra Layer: Don’t Forget to Turn It Off!

When you’re creating a Top (like a blouse, corset, or t-shirt), there’s a special setting hiding in the Model layer — it’s called Bra.

🫣 What does it do?

The Bra is part of the default model body. It helps you sketch clothing more accurately — but here’s the catch:

If you don’t turn it off, it will still be visible in the final look when your model wears the item in-game.

Imagine designing a beautiful sheer blouse or crop top — and then a random bra shows through. Not the vibe!

What to do?

In the Model layer, find the option Bra and uncheck it.

This hides the bra in your design workspace and removes it from the final model view in the app.

💡 Tip:

Always double-check this setting before publishing any top.

A visible bra under delicate fabrics or cutouts can ruin your design’s polish — and even lower your contest score!

Bonus Tip:

Sometimes, leaving the bra on during sketching can help you line up necklines or straps.

Just remember to turn it off before you hit “Save”!
