What Is a Trapper Hat?

A trapper hat is a warm winter hat with fur trim and long ear flaps that can hang down or be tied under the chin.

Originally worn by North American trappers and hunters (hence the name), it has become a popular winter fashion accessory — cozy, practical, and visually voluminous.

Where and how to wear a trapper hat:

perfect for winter and cold climates;

pairs well with parkas, puffers, wool coats, and outdoor looks;

can be made from leather, suede, fabric, or full faux fur.

🔹 Step 1. Shape the Base

1. Open the project where you want to create the hat.

2. Use Point Mode to form the base silhouette — a rounded cap shape.

3. Set the base color of the hat.

🔹 Step 2. Add Fur Elements

1. Go to the Details tab.

2. Add the first shape — the front fur panel across the forehead.

3. Add the second shape — one of the ear flaps.

4. Switch to the properties for the back layer of your project and add the second ear flap there.

This gives the hat its signature two side flaps.

🔹 Step 3. Color & Fabric

1. Set the color of the main hat layer.

2. For the fur sections, open the Fabric tab and choose Fur.

3. Adjust the fur shade — natural, white, grey, brown, or any other color you like.

🔹 Step 4. Shading the Fur and Adding Volume

1. Use a dark brush to add shadows:

along the edges of the fur pieces,

under the front panel,

between the ear flaps and the main hat body.

2. Use a light brush to create highlights where light hits the fur — this adds fluffiness and realism.

3. Add soft shadows on the main hat layer beneath the fur pieces to show that the fur is sewn on top.

✨ Result

You’ll get a warm, fluffy, and realistic trapper hat with rich fur texture and a recognizable shape. This accessory works beautifully in winter-themed outfits and adds a cozy northern vibe to your design.
