How to Create a Seam Using Brushes in Studio

A seam is not just a line; it’s an element that brings clothing to life by adding texture and natural softness. Today, I’ll show you how to draw a seam manually using brushes — a flexible and expressive method perfect for small areas and complex shapes.

🎨 When to use the Brush method?

  • When you want a soft and natural-looking seam with gentle color transitions
  • To emphasize handmade or decorative stitching
  • If you work with a pen device (tablet, stylus)
  • For complex curves and shapes where a straight line looks too rigid

🧵 Step-by-step instructions:

1. Open the clothing layer you want to add seams to

For example, select the skirt or top layer where you want the seam.

2. Add a new Brush layer

Tap “+ New  Brush” to create a separate brush layer for easy editing later.

3. Choose the right brush

4. Set up your brush

Color: slightly lighter or darker than the main fabric color — to add volume

Size: small, usually 1–4 pixels

Opacity: 60–100% for a gentle, natural look

5. Draw the seam manually

— Carefully stroke along the intended seam line

— Zoom in and use undo if needed for precision

6. Add volume to the seam

Create another brush layer to add soft highlights and shadows on one side of the seam, creating a volume effect.

7. Additional effects

For decorative seams, add dotted or dashed strokes — they add texture and a handmade feel.

📌 Best use cases for this method:

— Areas with curved or irregular shapes

— Decorative, soft, and handmade-looking stitches

— Small sections like darts, panels, or patterns
