🎨 3D Illusion: Two-Color Volume Effect

Want your design to look more realistic and dimensional?

Here’s how I manually draw a 3D effect — using just two colors and soft brushes.

🪄 I use this technique to create depth and simulate folds on fabric, especially when there are no built-in shadows or highlights that fit my idea.

Step by step:

1. Start with a base layer

I pick any shape with a simple fabric.

I’ll work on top of it using brushes.

2. Add a soft shadow

I create a new brush layer.

Choose a color that’s slightly darker than the base fabric.

Brush settings:

  • Size: medium or large
  • Opacity: 100%
  • Intensity: 30–50%

I softly draw along one edge or corner — where I want to show depth or simulate a fold.

3. Add the highlight

I create another brush layer.

Pick a lighter color for the highlight.

Keep the same brush settings.

Paint on the opposite side, as if the light is coming from one direction.

4. Blend and refine

I use the eraser with low intensity to gently soften any harsh edges.

The goal is to create volume: light on one side, shadow on the other.

Result:

This gives a realistic 3D effect — like fabric is folding, puffing, or curving —

and all with just two brush layers.

📌 Where I use this technique:

  • Volume on sleeves and skirts
  • Simulated folds and seams
  • Highlights on accessories
  • Emphasizing belts
