Shading on a swing dress

Shading is tricky and most of us want our designs to look realistic at least a little. Sometimes to achieve the look we want, shading or glare will help a lot!

I made this dress but none of the built-in shadows really fit this skirt style.

I erased all the shadow and glare so that I could shadow the areas myself.

I want this to look like a swing dress, with a skirt like this:

While I’m not quite talented enough to shade this realistically, I can do a simpler version using basic tools in PS Studio.

First, I’m going to look at the folds in the game to see if I can find any that fit within the silhouette.

I like this one for a couple parts of the skirt.

I am going to lighten these parts:

and shade the parts in-between to help give the skirt that swing skirt look.

I always start with a brush with the opacity about 20-40% so I can shade gradually to avoid any hard lines.

This is how it looks once I finished – definitely not perfect but it was fairly simple when I follow basic principles of shading and glare.
